In 2020, the United Nations General Assembly adopted the United Nations Decade (UN Decade) of Healthy Ageing (2021–2030), which is a transformative collaboration of diverse sectors and stakeholders to foster healthy ageing for older people. The WHO concept of Healthy Ageing (ie, the process of developing and maintaining the functional ability that enables well-being in older age) has initiated a global discussion about the need for shifting paradigms to reorient health and social services towards person-centred and coordinated models of care.
From the perspective of the continuum of care and services acting synergistically, all health and social care settings (including long-term care facilities and hospitals) need to evolve and embrace an integrated way of operating to support functional ability in older people.
Facing the rapid global population ageing and the growing unmet needs of older people, WHO is planning to convene a four-day event to facilitate global-level discussions among stakeholders in the implementation of care for healthy ageing. This event aims at sharing practices and finding common grounds for collaboration. Models of integrated health and social care, capacity building and support of health and care workforce including informal carers will be shared and discussed.
This meeting will be co-organized by a Member State, the Republic of Korea (ROK), which is one of the most rapidly ageing society and a continuous supporter of WHO’s work on healthy ageing and integrated care and long-term care. The topics and the discussions in the meeting will also be relevant to the country’s ongoing issues and challenges related to integrated health and care systems for older people.
