Dr. Jean Kaseya Assumes Director General Role at Africa CDC, Paving the Way for Strengthened Health Systems in Africa

The Assembly of the African Union has recently announced the appointment of Dr. Jean Kaseya from the Democratic Republic of Congo as the Director General of the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC). Dr. Kaseya’s tenure spans a four-year mandate wherein he will oversee and guide the organization towards achieving its core functions and key objectives, as laid out in its statute.

The Africa CDC, in accordance with its statute, is entrusted with several pivotal mandates:
a) Establishment of Event-Based Surveillance: This initiative aims to detect potential disease threats emanating from informal and non-structured sources that often operate outside the conventional health sector, ensuring early detection and timely response to emerging health challenges.

b) Assistance in International Health Regulation Compliance: Working closely with member states, Africa CDC will support and aid countries in addressing gaps pertaining to compliance with International Health Regulations, fostering a unified and strengthened health response across the continent.

c) Supporting Public Health Emergency Preparedness and Response: The organization will play a crucial role in bolstering the preparedness and response mechanisms for public health emergencies, ensuring swift and effective interventions during crises.

d) Mapping Hazard and Risk Assessments: Through regional and country-level assessments, Africa CDC will map out potential hazards and risks within member states, facilitating proactive measures to mitigate these threats.

In his capacity as Director General, Dr. Kaseya will be responsible for formulating and executing substantive work programs for the Regional Collaborating Centers. Moreover, he will ensure that planned activities are carried out efficiently and within the stipulated timelines, further enhancing the organization’s efficacy in fulfilling its mandates.

Dr. Jean Kaseya’s appointment brings with it a renewed sense of commitment towards strengthening Africa’s healthcare landscape.
