Ghana has launched a National Patient Safety Strategy, a new framework aimed at protecting patients and health workers from avoidable harm in healthcare delivery has been launch. The launch took place in Accra during the 2025 National Patient Safety and Healthcare Quality Conference, held under the theme “Safe Care for Every Newborn and Every Child.”
The strategy is Ghana’s direct response to the World Health Organization’s Global Patient Safety Action Plan (GPSAP) 2021–2030, which calls on member states to put patient safety at the heart of health systems.
Ghana’s move follows a 2021 nationwide assessment of patient safety gaps, which highlighted the urgent need for a structured approach to safer healthcare.
Investment in infrastructure, workforce training
Guest Speaker Dr. Isabella Sagoe-Moses reinforced the call for investment in infrastructure, workforce training, stronger data systems, and stricter adherence to safety protocols. Development partners pledged continued support to strengthen newborn and paediatric care, while emphasizing that safe care is fundamental to building a trustworthy health system.
National Quality and Safety Coordination Committee Inaugurated
As part of the patient safety agenda, GHS also inaugurated a 13-member National Quality and Safety Coordination Committee. The committee, chaired by Dr. Lawrence Ofori Boadu, Director of the Institutional Care Division, will oversee the implementation of quality and safety standards across all health facilities.
Acting Director-General Dr. Samuel Kaba Akoriyea stressed that the committee’s work will focus on accountability, equity, and visibility. “No Ghanaian should have to call a high-ranking official before receiving care,” he said, noting that the committee’s role is to make quality care accessible to everyone, regardless of status or location.
The committee draws members from key GHS divisions, including Policy, Planning, Monitoring and Evaluation (PPMED), Health Promotion, Nursing and Midwifery, Internal Audit, Supplies and Drug Management, Pharmaceutical Services, Legal, and Health Administration.
